If you have ever thought about taking an easy outback adventure, with some history and fun all rolled into the package… then grab your boots and cowboy hat and head out to the historic and charming outback town of Charters Towers.   There is plenty to see and do along the way and one of the highlights would have to be taking a tour at Texas Longhorn Wagon Tours and Safaris, just 10km from Charters Towers at Leahton Park.

Linda and Michael are amazing hosts at Leahton Park and you will get an authentic outback adventure (and some ‘Dad Jokes’ thrown in for good measure thanks to Michael).  Leahton Park is home to the largest purebred herd of Texas Longhorns in Australia.  It is also home to the 2013 Guinness World Record Holder, JR, a steer born and raised at Leahton Park and was certified to have the longest horns measured tip to tip of all cattle in the world. His horns are now three metres from tip to tip.  Quite a balancing act!

The historic town of Ravenswood is located between Townsville and Charters Towers and well worth a visit to immerse yourself in the sentiment of yesteryear. Once a thriving gold mining settlement,the remains of mullock heaps, tall chimneys, poppet heads and discarded mine machinery are scattered through the countryside. Ravenswood is now a small community, but recent mining has once again given a new lease of life to the town.

Charters Towers will leave you nostalgic for the days of the gold rush. When gold was first discovered here in 1871, Charters Towers became a gold rush town and quickly grew to be the second largest town in Queensland. The grandeur of the day remains with the ornate heritage buildings of a proud and prosperous time. The views from the lookout are well worth the effort, especially for sunrise or sunset. Immerse yourself in the history with a tour of the Venus Gold Battery and a browse through the Miners Cottage. There is a range of activities for all to discover in the beautiful Charters region!
