The global Slow Food movement was started in Italy in 1986 to oppose the fast food trend. It has grown into a huge network doing wonderful things particularly linking urban dwellers with rural producers. See slowfood.com There are local groups called convivia (from the word conviviality, meaning friendship) in 160 countries around the world. Slow Food NQ is the 18th in Australia, the most northerly and only one in the tropical north. It was launched in December 2016 at the screening of a film about food waste “Theatre of Life” with Massimo Batturo, then the world’s top chef and restaurant owner. Last Thursday I was invited to capture the first Slow Food NQ dinner, held at PePPi PePPi Italian Restaurant in Cannon Park, Townsville. How lucky was I! The food was amazing and the speakers, Amorelle Dempster who heads Slow Food Australia and our very own Renae Tobin, from Tobin Fishtales in North Ward, spoke with passion. Many local producers and Townsville foodies feasted for the night, thanks to the delicious menu prepared by the wonderful chef, Brent and his team at Peppi Peppi. Otto’s added a beautiful display of local produce to welcome diners. Townsville is in for some interesting events where you’ll have the chance to learn more about food and what can be found in our region. It’s open for everyone who is involved with, or interested in learning about food, having fun and discovering locally grown produce.
Nothing scares most people more than the thought of going to the dentist…. until now!!!

On a recent trip to Mount Isa I had the pleasure of doing an engagement shoot for Ben and his beautiful fiance, Beverly. Many a romance and marriage have developed in Mount Isa and having met through mutual friends about 5 years ago, Ben and Beverly spent their time getting out and about with friends and enjoying all the great aspects of living in a remote location with classic events such as horse racing, rodeos and weekend camping trips….but no rock climbing! I’m sure there must be a story or 2 behind that comment…
Ben and Beverly have now relocated to Southern Queensland. Like most other ex-Mount Isan’s they say they are missing their friends and only being 5 minutes from work! I’m sure they have taken with them a huge set of awesome memories of their days in Isa! Congratulations guys and very best wishes for the new chapter.
One of my favourite aspects of my business is documenting the work of local businesses. This project was commissioned by Rod Johnstone Group to document their construction of the new Oliver Brown Cafe. If you love chocolate and coffee and all things yummy, then get down to The Strand and check out the first Oliver Brown cafe in North Queensland. You won’t be disappointed. The exceptional fit-out, featuring solid timber, brick and tiles is thanks to the team at Rod Johnstone Group and certainly sets the scene for a relaxing ambience. I look forward to my next visit and another yummy selection from the menu 🙂
I recently had the pleasure of photographing a completed renovation project in Hermit Park, designed and constructed by Nixon Build. The home was professionally styled by the very talented and creative Anna from Ethos Interiors. The renovation was a tasteful mix of retaining the charm and character of a classic Queenslander home, and a stylish contemporary twist in the new kitchen. Congratulations to Bret and the team from Nixon Build for winning the North Queensland Housing & Construction Awards 2016 – Home Renovation/Remodelling Project up to $275,000
